I found an interesting series of articles on using Google Earth to map local gliding features and facilitate cross-country flights. It's here at a blog called The Soaring Laboratory (along with follow-up articles including a presentation the author, Michael Reid, made to the 2010 SSA convention

http://soaringlab.blogspot.com/2010/01/cross-country-planning-tool-google-maps.html

I think this would be a great idea for local clubs in Australia, to show land-outs, house thermals, circuits etc (plus much more).

I have changed the wind speed parameters to have a fixed max value of
40 Kts, this should operate as of the next run this afternoon.

I have also changed max cloudbase, max thermal
strength etc. to a fixed scale, which will be changed for summer and winter periods,
or rather for DST or non-DST periods.

Max height will be 14,000' for all height parms, and max strength 1100
fpm (11 Kts netto) for the 'summer' (DST) period, and 10,000' and 700
fpm for 'winter' (non-DST).

I may tweak these values later if required; I'll see how the scale looks.
These changes were so that when scanning through the blipmaps (or using the animated viewer)
any particular colour always relates to the same value, rather than floating as before.
